Source the Frame

Status: Draft

Introduction

It is not a big surprise that the Voron  v2.4 needs a frame, too. The Voron design team decided to use the standard 2020 aluminium extrusions most of us know from many 3d Printers and other DIY projects. The only specialty here is that some of the extrusions need holes and threads.

Goal

The goal here is that I want to have all needed parts of the frame from one source. I see no good reason to source some extrusions from source A and other from source B. I have no problem cutting, threading and drilling the extrusions myself but since someone may not have the
required tools at hand, I will add sources that are precut, threaded and drilled.

Possible solutions

I found several sources for the extrusions, some are full frame sets, others are generic extrusion supplier:

Dold

Dold is a German supplier for most of the things you need to build a machine. From stepper motors (open and closed loop), Mills and all needed electronic and mechanical components.

Pros

  • Local supplier
  • fast delivery

Cons

  • Drilling needed
  • Thread cutting needed
  • People reported bended extrusions

LDO

LDO is a well known and trusted supplier of stepper motors and extrusions-

Pros

  • Easy to source
  • Known as one of the top frame suppliers

Cons

  • Upper price range
  • Not all of the t-nuts will fit in their extrusion profile.

MiSUMi

MiSUMi is a supplier for a wide range of industry products, they are from Japan.

Pros

  • Very well known
  • Many very satisfied Voron customers
  • You can order the needed parts via the numbers you can find in the BOM
  • Drilled
  • Threaded

Cons

  • Top on the price range
  • Private persons can not order at MiSUMi, business customers only
  • Most of the online shops are short on stock

Myaluprofil

Local (German) supplier who supplies a lot of extrusions, roles, screws, nuts etc.

Pros

  • Local supplier
  • Very good pricing
  • Always very accurate

Cons

  • You must negotiate drilling and treading

Misc

There are many suppliers like Myaluprofile, Motedis or DOLD all over the world which provide good extrusions where you can order them cut to length. I would not expect that you can order the extrusions there threaded and drilled through.

Pros

  • Local supplier
  • Very good pricing

Cons

  • You must drill
  • You must cut the threads

Please let me know if you know more suppliers, I will add them here to this list!

Decision

I decided to start this project with MiSUMi extrusions.
  • I want to try the frame out
  • I own a company which is registered to MiSUMi already, so I can order there
  • I need some other parts for a mod from them too.

I will continue this part of the build as soon as I have the frame here on my desk.
